Who Was Baba Sali?

Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira was born in 1890 in Rissani, Morocco, into one of the most distinguished rabbinic families in North Africa. The Abuhatzeira dynasty traced its lineage back to the great sages of Babylon, and Yisrael showed extraordinary spiritual gifts from his earliest years. By his thirties, he was already known throughout Morocco as a man of miracles.

Baba Sali – meaning praying father in Arabic – was a term of endearment reflecting the deep love his community felt for him. People traveled from distant villages to receive his blessing, and story after story spread of miraculous healings and answered prayers.

From Morocco to the Holy Land

In 1964, Baba Sali made aliyah to Israel, eventually settling in the small desert town of Netivot in the Negev. Rather than choosing a large city, he chose a humble place – and the Jewish world followed him there. Netivot transformed into a center of pilgrimage as thousands streamed to receive his blessing, counsel, and prayer.

Even in his final decades, Baba Sali maintained a schedule of Torah study, prayer, and receiving visitors. His home was open to all who came – rich or poor, Ashkenazi or Sephardic. He turned no one away.

The Legacy of Baba Sali

Baba Sali passed away on the 4th of Shevat, 5744 (1984). His yahrtzeit draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Netivot each year, making it one of the largest annual gatherings in Israel. His tomb has become one of the most visited holy sites in the Jewish world.

His legacy lives in every Jewish home where his portrait hangs on the wall – a reminder of faith, blessing, and divine protection. His image has become iconic: the pure white turban, the kind and penetrating eyes, the long white beard, and the air of otherworldly holiness.
