Rav Chaim Kanievsky was born in 1928 in Pinsk, in what is now Belarus, to Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky – the legendary Steipler Gaon – and Miriam Karelitz, sister of the famed Chazon Ish. From birth, he was surrounded by Torah giants. His uncle, the Chazon Ish, was one of the most influential halachic authorities of the 20th century, and young Chaim absorbed Torah wisdom from his very earliest years.

The family settled in Bnei Brak, Israel, and it was there that Rav Chaim would spend the rest of his remarkable life – rarely traveling, but serving as a spiritual center for the entire Jewish world.

What set Rav Chaim Kanievsky apart was the absolute totality of his dedication to Torah study. By his own account, he completed the entire Talmud hundreds of times and had vast sections of rabbinic literature committed to memory. He rose before dawn, studied through the night, and maintained this schedule into his nineties.

His home in Bnei Brak became one of the most visited addresses in the Jewish world. A simple, unassuming apartment – yet thousands of Jews from every background came to ask questions, seek blessings, and receive guidance. Rav Chaim answered questions on halacha, medical dilemmas, business matters, and personal decisions, often with responses of just a few Hebrew words that contained worlds of wisdom.

Rav Chaim was a prolific author whose works span the entire breadth of halachic and Torah literature. Among his most widely studied books are Derech Emunah on the laws of agriculture, Orchot Yosher on ethical conduct, and his comprehensive glosses and novellae on the Talmud and halachic codes. He also authored accessible works for the broader public, including books on the weekly Torah portion that have been translated into many languages.

His Approach to Halacha and Jewish Life

Rav Chaim's approach to halachic questions was rooted in deep learning and unwavering fidelity to tradition. He did not issue rulings lightly. Yet he was also known for his warmth, his accessibility, and his concern for every individual who came before him.
