Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar – Portrait of a Tzaddik

Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum (1887–1979), the Satmar Rebbe, was one of the most towering and influential Chassidic leaders of the 20th century. Born in Sighet, Hungary, he was the son of the Kedushas Yom Tov and traced his lineage to the great Chassidic masters of earlier generations.

Rabbi Yoel survived the Holocaust — narrowly escaping Auschwitz in 1944 through the Kasztner train — and went on to rebuild Chassidic life in America, establishing the Satmar community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which became one of the largest and most vibrant Chassidic communities in the world. He was known for his fierce independence, uncompromising commitment to traditional Judaism, and his extraordinary love for every individual Jew.

His major work, Vayoel Moshe, articulates his stance on Jewish nationalism, and his Torah scholarship spans dozens of volumes. He was beloved by hundreds of thousands of followers who called him simply "the Rebbe."
