Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (1745–1812), known as the Alter Rebbe — the Old Rebbe — is the founder of Chabad-Lubavitch Chassidus, one of the most intellectually sophisticated and globally influential Jewish movements. Born in Liozna, Belarus, he studied under the Maggid of Mezeritch, the primary disciple of the Baal Shem Tov, and emerged as the leading systematizer of Chassidic thought.
The Alter Rebbe's masterwork, the Tanya, published in 1797, is a complete guide to the inner life of the Jewish soul. It explains the nature of the two souls within every Jew — the divine soul and the animal soul — and charts a practical path to spiritual transformation through contemplation, prayer, and love of God. The Tanya has been translated into dozens of languages and studied by millions.
He was twice arrested by the Czarist government on false charges of treason (accused of sending money to Ottoman Palestine against Russia's enemies). Both times he was released. The date of his second release, 19 Kislev, is celebrated annually as the "Rosh Hashana of Chassidus."
A portrait of the Alter Rebbe brings the spirit of intellectual Torah depth, joy in divine service, and boundless love for every Jew into your home.
