Rabbi Yisrael ben Eliezer (c. 1698–1760), known as the Baal Shem Tov — Master of the Good Name — is the founder of Chassidic Judaism, one of the most transformative spiritual movements in Jewish history. Born into poverty in the Carpathian Mountains of present-day Ukraine, he was orphaned young and spent his formative years in the mountains and forests, developing a profound relationship with God through nature and solitude.

In his thirties, the Baal Shem Tov revealed himself as a spiritual teacher and healer, using divine names to heal the sick and inspire the downtrodden. His core teaching — that God is present in all things, that joy is a pathway to the Divine, and that the simple farmer's sincere prayer reaches Heaven just as surely as the scholar's — was revolutionary in a world where learning was the primary measure of Jewish worth.

He attracted thousands of followers across Eastern Europe, many of them simple Jews who felt excluded from the scholarly elite. Through stories, song, dance, and the elevation of everyday acts to spiritual significance, he built a movement that today encompasses millions of Jews worldwide through its many Chassidic dynasties.

To hang his portrait is to invite the light of joy, faith, and divine closeness into your home.
