The Rambam – Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon

Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (1138–1204), known as the Rambam or Maimonides, stands as the towering intellectual figure of medieval Judaism — and arguably of all of Jewish history. Born in Córdoba, Spain, and forced to flee with his family during the Almohad persecution, he eventually settled in Fustat, Egypt, where he served as court physician to the Sultan Saladin while simultaneously producing works that reshaped Jewish law, philosophy, and medicine.

The Rambam's Mishneh Torah — a comprehensive codification of all Jewish law — took ten years to write and remains a definitive legal authority to this day. His Guide for the Perplexed, written in Arabic, reconciled Jewish theology with Aristotelian philosophy and influenced Christian and Islamic thinkers including Thomas Aquinas. His Thirteen Principles of Faith are recited by Jews around the world every morning.

Beyond his scholarship, the Rambam was a practicing physician who saw dozens of patients daily, wrote on medicine, astronomy, and logic, and led the Jewish community of Egypt. He is the embodiment of Torah u'Madda — the union of Torah wisdom and worldly knowledge.
