Materials Guide: Canvas vs Aluminum vs Glass vs Wall Printing for Jewish Art

Choosing the right surface changes how a piece of Jewish art feels in a room: a rabbi portrait on canvas feels like an oil painting in a study, the same portrait on aluminum feels like a gallery wall in a modern home, and a pasuk printed directly onto a shul wall becomes part of the building itself. Here is an honest guide to the four surfaces we print on most, so you can pick with confidence. Every piece is printed in our Los Angeles studio with UV-cured pigment inks that resist fading for decades.

Canvas: the classic choice

Best for: rabbinical portraits, living rooms, dining rooms, studies, traditional and warm interiors.

Canvas gives Jewish art the look and texture of a painting. The weave softens fine detail slightly, which flatters portraits of gedolim and scenes of old Jerusalem, and the matte surface means no glare under chandeliers or Shabbat candles. Our canvas is gallery-wrapped around a solid wood stretcher bar, so it hangs with no frame needed, though a floating gold or black frame finishes it beautifully. It is the lightest of our surfaces and the easiest to hang.

Keep in mind: canvas is not meant for bathrooms, kitchens with heavy steam, or outdoor sukkah walls.

Aluminum: modern, sharp and nearly indestructible

Best for: contemporary homes, offices, hallways, kitchens, Sefirot and abstract pieces, and anything with fine Hebrew lettering.

Printing on brushed or white aluminum produces the sharpest detail and the most vivid color of any surface we offer. Every letter of a pasuk stays crisp even at 40 x 60 inches. Aluminum is waterproof, scratch-resistant and will not warp, so it is the right choice for humid rooms and high-traffic spaces. It arrives with a hidden float mount that makes the piece appear to hover half an inch off the wall.

Keep in mind: the slight sheen of aluminum can reflect a window if hung directly opposite one. Choose a matte finish if that is a concern.

Glass: luminous and high-end

Best for: statement pieces, entryways, synagogue lobbies, donor walls, and art with light in it such as our Divine Radiance and Tree of Life designs.

Glass prints are made by printing onto the back of tempered glass, so the image is viewed through the glass and seems to glow from within. Golden light, candle flames and the night sky over Jerusalem look extraordinary this way. The surface is completely sealed, easy to wipe clean and very durable. It is our most premium surface and the one most often chosen for gifts and dedications.

Keep in mind: glass is the heaviest option and benefits from being hung on a stud or with proper anchors, which we include and explain.

Direct-to-wall UV printing: the art becomes the room

Best for: synagogues, Chabad houses, schools, sukkahs, children's rooms, and any wall that deserves to be more than paint.

Our UV wall printer prints your artwork directly onto the existing wall, floor to ceiling if you like, with no seams, no wallpaper and no frame. The ink cures instantly under UV light and bonds to the surface, so it is as permanent as paint but with photographic detail. We have printed a full Kotel scene across a shul wall and a Rebbe portrait eight feet tall. Watch it happen on our Our Process page. This service is available throughout Los Angeles County, and we travel for larger institutional projects.

Keep in mind: wall printing is permanent. We always do a full-size digital mockup on a photo of your actual wall first.
