Rabbeinu Tam – Rabbi Yaakov Ben Meir

Rabbi Yaakov ben Meir (1100–1171), known as Rabbeinu Tam — "Our Perfect Teacher" — was the leading Talmudic authority of his generation and the most prominent grandson of Rashi. Based in Ramerupt and later Troyes, France, he founded the school of Tosafists whose analytical method transformed Talmudic study forever.

Rabbeinu Tam's brilliance was matched only by his courage. In 1147, during the Second Crusade, he was attacked by Crusaders who stabbed him five times (one wound for each letter of "Godfrey," their leader) and left him for dead in a field. A nobleman who admired him intervened to save his life. Rabbeinu Tam survived and continued teaching for decades, undaunted.

His most famous work, Sefer HaYashar, contains both Talmudic novellae and ethical teachings that remain relevant today. He is also known for the dispute with his grandfather Rashi over the order of the Tefillin boxes — a dispute still observed practically, as many Jews wear both "Rashi Tefillin" and "Rabbeinu Tam Tefillin" each day.

His name, Tam — meaning "perfect" or "innocent" — echoes the description of our patriarch Jacob, and it suits him completely.
