Rav Chaim Kanievsky – Portrait of a Torah Giant

Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky (1928–2022), known simply as Rav Chaim, was the undisputed leader of Lithuanian (Litvish) Haredi Jewry for decades and one of the greatest Torah sages of the modern era. The son of the Steipler Gaon and nephew of the Chazon Ish, he was born into royalty of Torah scholarship and dedicated his entire life — nearly a century — to its study.

Rav Chaim lived in a modest apartment in Bnei Brak where he studied Torah for 16-18 hours a day, completing the entire Talmud, Midrash, and halachic literature multiple times. He was known to receive hundreds of visitors daily — people from across the world who came seeking blessings, guidance, and rulings on Jewish law. His answers were often brief, precise, and rooted in an encyclopedic knowledge of texts few could imagine mastering.

Despite his immense stature, Rav Chaim was famously humble, gentle, and accessible. He is credited with inspiring countless Jews to return to Torah observance and with issuing landmark rulings that guided Haredi communities worldwide through modern challenges. He passed away in 2022 at age 94, and hundreds of thousands attended his funeral in Bnei Brak.
