The Rif – Rabbi Yitzchak Alfasi

Rabbi Yitzchak ben Yaakov Alfasi (1013–1103), known as the Rif (acronym of Rabbi Yitzchak Fasi), was one of the foremost Talmudic decisors of the medieval period and a foundational pillar of Jewish law. Born in Kala ibn Hammad, Algeria, he studied in Kairouan, Tunisia, under the great Rabbi Nissim ben Yaakov, before settling in Fez, Morocco — from which he derived his name "Fasi."

In 1088, at age 75, the Rif was forced to flee Morocco under mysterious circumstances and settled in Córdoba, Spain, where he continued teaching and writing until his death at age 90. His most celebrated work, the Sefer HaHalachot, is an extraordinary condensation of the entire Talmud that extracts only the legally relevant material and presents it as definitive rulings. This work served as the primary legal code for Sephardic Jews for centuries and remains a standard reference today.

Rambam (Maimonides), writing a century later, said that the Rif's rulings could be relied upon in almost all cases. The Rif stands as one of three pillars — along with Rambam and Rosh — upon which the Shulchan Aruch was built.
