The Vilna Gaon – Rabbi Eliyahu of Vilna

Rabbi Eliyahu ben Shlomo Zalman (1720–1797), universally known as the Vilna Gaon — the Genius of Vilna — is widely regarded as the greatest Torah scholar of the modern era. Born in Seltz, Belarus, and based in Vilna (present-day Vilnius, Lithuania), he demonstrated extraordinary intellectual gifts from earliest childhood, delivering a Torah lecture before the scholars of Vilna at the age of six.

The Vilna Gaon spent his entire life immersed in Torah study — reportedly sleeping no more than two hours a night, never accepting a rabbinic position, and dedicating every waking moment to mastering the entire breadth of Jewish knowledge. He authored hundreds of works spanning Talmud, Kabbalah, mathematics, astronomy, and Hebrew grammar. His commentary on the Shulchan Aruch remains a definitive legal authority to this day.

Unlike many great scholars, the Gaon remained a private figure — refusing communal leadership so nothing would distract from his learning. His influence shaped Lithuanian Torah scholarship for generations and continues to define the Yeshiva world today.
